It is based on Buddha's teachings on mutual respect for the couple. The rite involves reading important scriptures stating that all living beings have the same characteristics as Buddha legate to the life of the universe. The spouses and witnesses drink three sips of sake from three different cups that represent the past, the present and the future. It is a spiritual ritual and has nothing to do with religion.
